Children’s Continence Physiotherapy

Paediatric and Children’s Continence Physiotherapy provides compassionate, expert support for children aged 5-17 who experience bladder and bowel challenges such as incontinence, day wetting, night wetting and soiling. We also offer support to self-managed or plan-managed NDIS participants.

How we can help

Working closely with families, we create personalised, age-appropriate treatment plans to support each child’s progress and independence.

A paediatric continence assessment with our pelvic floor physiotherapists usually starts with a detailed chat about your child’s bladder, bowel, fluid intake, and toileting habit

A gentle physical check may follow checking movement, strength and balance in the legs and hips. To assess the pelvic floor we often use tools like ultrasound or biofeedback to assess muscle coordination by placing an ultrasound on the child’s lower tummy (no internal, vaginal or genital exams are conducted on children at our clinic).

Our pelvic health physiotherapist, Julia Urquhart has completed advanced training in paediatric pelvic floor health and has a special interest in childhood bladder and bowel care.

Finally, we create a simple, fun and practical plan that may include toileting routines, posture, coordination of the pelvic floor, and bladder/bowel strategies to support continence at home and school.

Frequently Asked Questions

We help with a wide range of bladder and bowel concerns including daytime wetting, bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), constipation, soiling (encopresis), urgency and frequency, difficulty with toilet training, and post-toilet accidents. We also support children with underlying conditions like developmental delays or sensory issues that affect continence.

Bedwetting is common, especially in younger children, but if it continues beyond the age of 5 or causes stress, we recommend an assessment. It’s rarely due to laziness or bad habits — we focus on understanding the cause and gently guiding your child toward dry nights.

Yes! Pelvic floor physiotherapy sits in the category of “urotherapy”. The International Children's Continence Society (ICCS) recommends urotherapy as a first-line treatment for lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction in children.

Continence physiotherapy uses gentle, non-invasive techniques to assess and treat pelvic floor function, posture, bladder and bowel habits, and lifestyle factors. We teach children and parents practical strategies, exercises, and routines to support healthy toileting.

Our approach is holistic and child-centred. We take time to understand your child’s routines, physical development, and emotional wellbeing. We use physiotherapy specific assessment and treatment techniques and equipment to build a program that is tailored to your child. We will always link in with your medical practitioners to ensure a holistic and complete approach to assessment and treatment.

We typically support children from age 5 and up — particularly when they’re ready for or struggling with toilet training, or when continence concerns begin to affect daily life, school, or social activities.

Absolutely. Parents play a vital role in the success of treatment. We provide clear guidance, reassurance, and education to help you support your child effectively at home, without pressure or blame.

Yes, we accept a range of funding options. Eligible clients can access Medicare rebates with a valid referral (such as through a Chronic Disease Management Plan). We also accept private health insurance with extras cover that includes physiotherapy. For children with an NDIS plan (self-managed or plan-managed), our services can be accessed under the appropriate support categories. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, we’re happy to guide you through the options.
