Mastitis and breast care physiotherapy at Calm Physiotherapy is a specialised treatment designed to relieve pain, clear blocked ducts, and manage post-surgical swelling. Our expert, evidence-based approaches promote healing and restore comfort, supporting your long-term breast health.

How we can help

Dealing with breast pain, blocked ducts, or acute mastitis can be deeply uncomfortable and challenging. At Calm Physiotherapy, we provide safe, evidence-based treatments utilising gentle manual techniques, therapeutic ultrasound (TUS), and lymphatic drainage to alleviate inflammation. By using non-invasive sound waves to penetrate deep into the tissue, we help break down blockages, improve milk flow, and reduce painful swelling quickly and effectively.

For individuals navigating post-surgical recovery, including pre and post-cancer mastectomies, lumpectomies, or cosmetic breast surgeries, our team offers dedicated, compassionate care. Our practitioners, Jennifer Romanczukiewicz and Kate Alkemade, specialise in lymphoedema physiotherapy to manage post-operative oedema and complex scarring. Kate focuses on early intervention after a cancer diagnosis to safely restore mobility , while Jennifer utilises extensive rehabilitation training to fit medical-grade compression garments, ensuring you achieve the best possible physical comfort and clinical outcomes

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it is a safe and non-invasive treatment. It involves a physiotherapist moving a small handheld probe in circular motions over the affected breast using a conductive gel. The high-frequency sound waves penetrate deep into the tissue to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and break down stubborn blockages. Sessions typically last 5–10 minutes.

While both cause breast pain and hard lumps, mastitis is an inflammatory condition that often spreads across the breast tissue. It is frequently accompanied by red, warm skin over the area, alongside systemic, flu-like symptoms such as a fever, chills, body aches, and fatigue.

Standard post-operative oedema generally reduces significantly within the first two weeks, with most swelling clearing up by six weeks. If your swelling persists beyond this timeframe, feels tight, or restricts your ability to progress in rehabilitation, our specialised lymphoedema practitioners can offer targeted treatment.

While scars mature and flatten naturally over 12 to 18 months, some can become tight, painful, or enlarged (pathological scars). Physiotherapy uses targeted techniques—such as scar massage, stretching, silicone therapy, and laser treatment—to minimise tightness, reduce pain, and restore your full range of motion.

Medical-grade compression garments are the gold standard for managing lymphoedema and chronic swelling, but they must fit correctly to be effective. Our practitioner, Jennifer, has completed extensive training to source and fit the best garments for your unique shape, ensuring maximum comfort, ease of putting them on, and optimal clinical results.
